Halloween: Not Good Excuse for 3-Month Eating Binge

If you’ve just launched your annual 3-month eating binge from Halloween until New Years, I gently suggest changing that program. There is no reason to eat yourself silly for the next three months only to spend the following nine trying to lose what you gained.

Instead, try something different this year and stop holiday weight gain.

1. Learn EFT. It’s easy, quick, painless and you can use it all the time for life stresses and more. It helps with eating and weight loss because it relieves stress, and we all know stress leads to weight gain (at least many times it does — some actually lose weight when under great stress). These pages explain EFT and NLP and how they can be used for weight loss, then the last page has worksheets so you can learn EFT basics for weight loss. [links open in new window].

2. Get The Daily Bites. Sent two or three times a week, short lessons in how I use EFT to maintain my 80 pound weight loss and how you can do the same. The Daily Bites – EFT for Weight Loss

3. Start to use EFT daily. I shouldn’t be surprised, but I still am at how many people learn this simple technique and then still don’t do it. That obviously suggests they aren’t really ready to lose weight at all, but hey, use EFT to get over it. Start with “Even though I don’t know if I’m ready to lose weight, I deeply and completely accept myself,” and take it from there.

4. Learn E.A.T: Eating Awareness Training. I’ve included this in Session 5 of the Ending Emotional Eating workshop, but you can adopt the principles simply by paying attention when you eat. Start with your next meal. Sit down. Look at the food. Notice the colors, texture, smells, etc. Be there.

Take a small bite and feel the food in your mouth. Move it around. Chew, suck, nibble, (eating is quite erotic). Don’t be in a big hurry to swallow, savor the brief moment of the food in your mouth, and see what you notice that you hadn’t noticed before. Do this with every single bite for an entire meal and see what happens.

One thing I can guarantee is it takes a long time to do this, so you’ll find yourself wishing you could hurry up, and that leads me to the question: Why do we think so much about eating only to rush ourselves through it? Interesting question anyway.

Take your time with your food. Eat an apple and really notice it. How does it sound when you bite in? Is it sweet? What’s the texture? Do you like that texture or would you rather it be something else? Every variety of apple is different. Get a few and have a tasting party.

When you stop to notice what you’re eating you’ll also experience the sensation of being satisfied and that’s the first step toward learning how to eat like a person without a weight problem.

Remember, it’s perfectly fine to overeat once in awhile, but change from overeating regularly to overeating on occasion, and you’ll start to lose weight. If you gobble your food, you’re likely eating far more than you need simply because you aren’t paying attention to the signals your body gives about being satisfied, content, happy. Give yourself a chance to experience this, just once this week and you’ll discover a whole new world of eating.

5. Think of the holidays as a time for lots of opportunities for your “occasional” indulgences, but the rest of the meals, eat normally (meaning like a sane person). This isn’t your last chance to eat candy, so don’t act like you have to eat it all.

Brazilian Diet Pills – Scam Alert

Everyone Wants a Diet Pill

Take this pill and lose weight and all is well with the world, only one problem: they don’t work. Sure, you can lose weight with prescription diet pills, a little bit that is, but at what cost?

All a scammer has to do is claim to have a diet pill that helps you lose weight and people start throwing money. The claims aren’t true, and the companies are usually short-lived because they know they are breaking the law by making false claims yet they persist.

“This diet pill really works! Take one in the morning and tomorrow you’ll be 10 pounds lighter!” “Eat whatever you want!” “No effort.” blah, blah, blah.

If there really were a pill that effectively killed your appetite, would you still eat? Think about it. Do you eat now with no appetite? Sometimes? Okay, that’s my point. Appetite suppresants only work if you are paying close attention to your hunger signals. Eat when hungry, sleep when tired. Good advice.

Binge Dieting Decreases Breast Cancer Risk in Mice

Mice Benefit from Yo-Yo Dieting Say Researchers

Finally, another mouse study indicated that on-again, off-again dieting may actually prevent breast cancer in postmenopausal women. Mice on the so-called “yo-yo” diet regimen had a 96 percent reduction in cancer, compared to the animals allowed to eat whatever they wanted.

The results were surprising to the researchers who initially believed the effect of this yo-yo pattern would be detrimental (obviously, that’s what any sane person would have assumed).

“This is the way people used to eat,” says study author Margot Cleary, Ph.D., an associate professor at the University of Minnesota’s Hormel Institute in Austin. “For many, many centuries for human beings it was feast or famine. Maybe the body has adapted to that.”

Whether the findings will apply to humans remains to be seen but, if they do, they would add a new twist to what is known about nutrition and disease.

“It’s been well known for decades that chronic food restriction is protective against lots of things, not just cancer, but it was thought the protective effect existed to the degree you restricted calories,” Dr. Cleary explains.

“Our results show that it’s really the manner that you receive these calories that can have a significant effect on what the impact is,” she notes.

You can incorporate “cheat days” into your dieting plan and still lose weight. In fact, that’s the method employed by many bodybuilders and other elite athletes who must stay in top form year around. A once a week cheat day (or cheat meal for the ultra disciplined) goes a long way toward keeping your sanity, plus your body likes it as it does get used to the feast/famine cycle.

If you want to diet, do so with a bit more common sense. Stay on your plan for a day or two, then allow a bit of a cheat day, then back to your plan for another day or two and so forth. This disciplined approach to yo-yo dieting may be just the thing to jump start your weight loss.

By cheat day I mean go ahead and have what you want, but I don’t mean carry home two grocery sacks full of treats and consume them at one sitting. Sane binging is eating half the bag of Hershey’s Kisses, while out-of-control binging is eating that bag, plus three others you bought for Halloween, then having to go back out to restock for the trick-or-treaters.

Fast Food Wins Again! No Lawsuits Against Burger Chains Cries Congress

The US Congress today approved a bill which if passed and enacted into law would forbid lawsuits against fast food companies for causing obesity. This bill is so poorly written it’s a joke, yet everyone’s jumping aboard, lest they be considered “lawsuit happy.” The point is, you cannot write a sweeping “no lawsuits” bill and expect it to go unchallenged.

Think back to tobacco. Originally it was a plant that when smoked caused a nice pleasant sensation and cigaretts and cigars were born. Then Big Tobacco stepped up to the plate introducing numerous chemicals to “enhance the flavor” and speed of the burn (hence you must buy more smokes). Chemicals they knew were dangerous or at least should have known in legal parlance. Some were added to make a person desire another smoke, or help one get addicted, and all this went on for decades until finally someone stepped up to the plate with a lawsuit. Today it still goes on to a large extent but not quite so blatantly, yet, Congress wants to stem the tide of lawsuits against Big Food before they’ve even begun? Fat chance (no pun intended).

A Hamburger A Day chimes in

BBC News: US Approves “Cheeseburger Bill”

Good law needs to be very specific and this bill is far too broad and sweeping to have any effect whatsoever. This bill simply attempts to create sweeping legislation against the rights of the citizens in favor of the corporations and frankly, I’m getting pretty sick of it. We do know that eating fast food regularly is unhealthy, yet advertisements say otherwise and that’s perfectly legal. Fast food (restaurant food in general) is too high in calories and saturated fat, plus contains who knows what chemicals which cause who knows what illnesses, so yes, I’d vote no on this bill. Write me a bill with substance that is specific and then we’ll talk.

Splenda Brown Sugar Released

Finally, Splenda® Brown Sugar. I’ve hunted the stores for months trying to find DiabetiSweet Brown Sugar Substitute to no avail. Evidentially it didn’t sell well enough for stores to stock it, but now we’ll see how the new Splenda Brown Sugar Blend fares.

The brown sugar in the product (what they’ve added) allows consumers more of the browning, rising, texture, moistness and molasses-like flavor characteristics of baked goods made with brown sugar. Consumers need to use only one-half cup of Splenda Brown Sugar Blend to replace the sweetness of a full cup of brown sugar.

Okay, let’s think about this a minute. If Splenda Brown Sugar Blend is Splenda mixed with brown sugar, why couldn’t we do this ourselves? I hate when I pay extra for something I could mix up myself, so if anyone is experimenting, let me know.

Brown sugar Splenda is a proprietary blend of brown sugar and Splenda Brand Sweetener, or sucralose. In other words, it’s sugar. It’s also important to realize that despite all claims to the contrary, Splenda is not calorie free. The US labeling laws allow a claim of zero or “no calories” if the calorie count is less than 5 per serving. That explains why sometimes that packet of candy will claim to serve 2.3 people! So when you consume more than one serving, guess what; you’re eating lots of real calories.

Yes, Virginia, Splenda contains approximately 4 calories per teaspoon, and .9g carbohydrate. Not a huge amount, but if you enjoy an occasional Splenda packet for a snack, and plenty of people do because they think it’s calorie free, you are getting lots of unwanted calories. Five Splenda packets equals 20 calories, and so on. Every calorie counts, so don’t consume empty calories even in the form of Splenda.

If you want a snack, have an apple; 80 calories of wonderful, juicy goodness and crunch.

Splenda’s Recipe: Brown Sugar Substitute
1 cup artificial sweetener*
1/4 cup sugar-free maple syrup

Mix ingredients well.
Replaces 1 cup of regular brown sugar to be used when baking.

*Use type of sweetener that measures 1 cup to 1 cup of granulated sugar like Splenda, duh.

I note this recipe isn’t using brown sugar but maple syrup. I want to know how much real brown sugar they use to mix with the granulated Splenda so we can all save bucks and just mix our own. Home chemists alert! Let’s get on this detective work because this is not rocket science. The first person to crack the code wins a free t-shirt.

Remember, sugar free is not calorie free. If you make a recipe using a sugar substitute, still enjoy the same portion you would have otherwise. Don’t fall victim to the trap of thinking you can eat all you want, just because it doesn’t have any sugar.

One cup of Splenda contains 96 calories and 24g carbohydrates. One cup of sugar contains 770 calories and 192g carbohydrates. You can see how this one substitute could equal big changes in your weight.

Artichokes for Weight Loss

High Cholesterol Helped with Artichoke

Alpine Pure announced today the launch of its Artichoke, Echinacea and St. John’s Wort herbal supplement product line in the United States. The product that caught my eye was Artichoke because they state it promotes improved liver function, stimulates fatty acid and cholesterol metabolism, and relieves flatulence and feelings of fullness.

Relieves flatulence? Who wouldn’t want that? They said “feelings of fullness” in the same sentence as relieves flatulence so I’m not sure what’s the implication? Does it relieve feelings of fullness or promote it? Not too many of us want a product to relieve the feeling of fullness. Guess I better put on my investigator’s cap and go find out.

Does Alpine Pure’s new Artichoke dried fresh plant juice help with lowering cholestorol and weight loss? We can find out soon enough as they say their new line of products is coming to health food stores in the U.S., and if anyone in Europe who has used these products is reading this, please let me know results you’ve achieved.

Farmer’s Market Diet

Eat More Locally Grow Food

The Farmer’s Market Diet means eating more fresh produce, preferably what is grown locally. Common sense tells me that a carrot pulled from the ground and eaten within hours would be more nutritious than one harvested and shipped halfway around the world.

Adam Drewnowski, Ph.D., director of the nutritional science program at the University of Washington, in Seattle said, “I see every cancer specialist in Seattle at the farmer’s market each week. That should tell you something.”

Here in Vancouver, Washington we have a very nice Farmers Market, which recently opened their indoor market. Check if your town has a farmers market and then go on down and visit. It’s fun, you get fresh air and free smiles.

In other words, fresh food is healthy food. One way to experiment is with baby vegetables. These are not different varieties, rather they are picked before they are fully mature, meaning they are sweeter and less fibrous in texture than their full-grown counterparts, besides, they’re just plain cute. If you’ve seen baby corn, you know what I mean.

Try some of these baby vegetables, or if you have a small garden space, grow your own miniature vegetable garden.

Lose Weight with PlayStation Games

Mog Fitness Equipment

If you’re in front of your computer all day, wouldn’t it be great if you could add in a bit of exercise at the same time? I lost 80 pounds riding my Schwinn AirDyne since I purchased it (around 1984). I’ve gotten so busy with work that now when I’m riding I’m wishing I had a computer nearby so I could work at the same time (I take multi-tasking to a whole new level). The NeXfit company has taken this idea to the gaming community with MOG Fitness Equipment and their interactive fitness bikes.

The concept is simple. You’re sitting there anyway; why not be riding a bike? I read while I my Airdyne at a steady pace. It works just fine for heart healthy exercise, burns calories and best of all, helps rev your metabolism for the whole day.

Unless you’re in Canada you may not be able to find one of these beauties; you sure can’t order it online. The NeXfit website sucks (as of today, Sept. 17, 2005). To check the price of the bikes I hit “add to cart” and up pop errors. The forum appears to have been hijacked but if you click the “Here’s what NeXfit as about” link, it does take you to a dinky forum with a few people asking where are the NeXfit folks and how there’s no customer service. 🙁

Hopefully this company will get it together because this is a great idea. It does cost a tidy $2,500 Canadian which is steep, but as more of these products hit the market, prices will slowly go down (we hope).

I paid $550 for my Schwinn Airdyne in 1984 which seemed a bit high at the time, yet now, 20 years later, that bike’s only cost me about $2.18 a month. Now that was one good investment. I have well over 10,000 miles on my Airdyne too, so they are durable. Time will tell if the NeXfit bikes are as well.

Robot Dog Food Police

Weight Loss Monitoring Dog

f you don’t already have someone acting as the Food Police in your household, soon you can get a robot dog to take over that chore. Sony’s Aibo TM robot dog is being used by Cynthia Breazeal and Cory Kidd at the MIT Media Lab in their project to create a “weight loss monitoring dog.” The dog would be able to track whether you’d done your exercise and met your nutritional goals (naturally you could lie). Your Aibo would respond when you’d ask, “How am I doing?” Bark, bark! Wag, wag. Breazeal and Kidd are serious enough to have a study planned for 30 overweight Boston residents.

At first glance it seems ridiculous, but hey, as a research project it’s actually quite clever. No telling where this work will lead. Meanwhile, use a calendar and gold stars or other stickers. I’d much rather see a smiley face than hear a yapping bog anyway.

Here’s the white paper on the concept of weight loss dogs.
