Getting Motivated to Lose Weight

How can I get back the dieting mindset? was asked in the About.com Weight Loss Forum:

Getting clear about what you want is the first step to getting motivated to go out there and get it. Ask yourself, what will having the dieting mindset do for me? Then just wait to see if your mind (your self talk) gives you a reply.

Self, what will having the dieting mindset do for me? Wait ...

Self says something such as, "It will make it easier to stay on track."

Then ask, "Self, if it is easier for me to stay on track, what will that do for me?"

Self says, "You'll relax and enjoy yourself more."

(In this process the proper thing to do is thank your "self" for giving you that awesome advice! by saying "thank you for wanting that for me.")

So, self, what will being able to relax and enjoy myself do for me?

Self perhaps says, "You'll feel calm and at peace."

Thank you for wanting calm and peace for me. (said with a big smile and lots of enthusiasm, might as well make it fun).

By feeling calm and at peace, what will feeling calm and at peace do for me?

You'll be able to create.

Thank you for wanting me to be able to create, and by being able to create, what will that do for me?

You'll contribute to the higher good.

Thank you for wanting that for me, and by contributing to the higher good, what will that do for me?

You'll be one.

Okay, that's me just rambling. Everyone's inner voice will tell a different story. The idea is to just keep asking yourself, what will THAT do for me? You are after your real outcome, what having what you want will do for you. In other words, goals are usually tangible things while outcomes are what having those things will give us, such as power, prestige, honor, gratefulness, etc. What you really want gives you the motivation to then go and get it.

If you only are looking at tonight and what you'll miss, you're missing out on an opportunity to discover what really makes you tick.
