Evidence: Peer Pressure Starts Early

This young lass already has a beverage but notice how her young friend is trying to foist another on her? Peer pressure starts young.

Wendy's New Salads: Nutritional Nightmare

Wendy's Restaurants have some new salads on the menu; let's check them out. Usually fast food restaurant salads are a nutritional nightmare; loaded with fat and sodium, and ultra high calorie, so be aware if you think you're eating low calorie just because it's a salad.

Go to their website and you run into the problem of needing the latest version of Flash, just to see their nutritional information which is a bad idea. Not everyone has the most up-to-date computer equipment and not everyone is interested in downloading and installing new software just so they can see information that should be presented in a way that no special software is required. After I endured the install process, (have to quit the browser, search for the file, etc., etc.) the page with nutritional info never loaded! Cripes.

For Mandarin Chicken Salad they list 180 calories for the salad. Oh, but wait one minute. There's more, like another 70 calories for the crispy noodles (that seems low, plus they are deep fried and loaded with sodium), and 130 more calories for roasted almonds, and an additional 170 calories for oriental sesame dressing. The real total is 550 calories. Why do they make it difficult?

They don't serve the salad in a bunch of separate bowls so you can pick and choose whether you want the almonds or the crispy noodles, so listing the nutritional information separately is just an attempt to mislead the public. Shame on you Wendys.

The Southwest Taco Salad starts with 400 calories, then add 45 for the "reduced fat acidified sour cream" (sounds real appetizing), 110 calories for Tortilla Strips and another 90 for the dressing and we are now eating a 645 calorie salad, which is starting to be ridiculous.

Don't be mislead. Salads at fast food restaurants are rarely a good thing. The "extras" add up to enormous calories, fat and sodium. Sometimes even a cheeseburger is a better nutritional value than a salad.

Weight Loss Tip: Immerse Your Mind in Aquaria

Distraction as Weight Loss Trick No. 1: IGF Award Winner Aquaria is my newest distraction (some might call it a time waster, but this is learning, really). Be sure to watch a video demo since the graphics don't do the game justice. The music is relaxing and even for a gaming newbie such as myself, it's not difficult (at least in level 1).

I heard about Aquaria via a teensy little mention in Wired, my fav magazine, probably a year ago. Soon the Mac version will be ready and then everyone can have carpal tunnel surprise. Outside of the hand problems, this is a great game.

How is Distraction a Weight Loss Aid?

Use it to your benefit. Don't put a bowl of chips next to your computer (your desk should be a food-free zone). Besides you can't type with sticky or salt encrusted fingers. Find a hobby and get lost in it (without snacking at the same time). Now, I'm off to try and figure out how to get past those boulders...

Weight Loss Surgery Cures Type 2 Diabetes

Just heard about this yesterday, but apparently they are discovering that those having gastric bypass or lap band surgery for weight loss are able to discontinue medication for type 2 diabetes immediately after surgery!

Here's an article about it written way back in 2007 and another article from WebMD from just this January 2008.

Read an excerpt of results of a study published in JAMA (Journal of American Medical Association) in the Jan 23rd Edition. This is very interesting. I'll need to do much more research to know if it's a reality or just another scam to induce more people to undertake risky surgery for the sake of money.

Generally those with Type 2 Diabetes can become non-diabetic with diet and exercise but I realize that's just not so easy for everyone. If we all moved to a desert island (with nothing but what grew there to eat) it'd be far easier to get lean. Raise your hand if you want to move to Gilligan's Island (sitcom from the 60s for the uninitiated).
